Parai & Silambam Open Workshop NYC (Sample)

Drum and spin: try Tamil folk arts in the park

An open-air morning to try two Tamil folk arts: parai, the frame drum that has called villages together for 2,000 years, and silambam, the bamboo-staff martial art.

Sessions

• 11:00 - Parai basics: the three core beats (adi, thalam, kuthu)
• 12:00 - Silambam footwork and safe staff spinning
• 13:00 - Group performance - everyone plays!

Drums and staffs are provided for RSVP holders. Want to keep practising at home? Add a practice parai to your order and take it with you.

Wear comfortable clothes and trainers. Rain moves us under the pavilion roof.
